Arsenal transfer latest: Gunners set to activate clause to extend Nacho Monreal’s contract

Arsenal have reportedly activated a clause in Nacho Monreal’s contract to extend his deal at the Emirates until the end of the 2019/20 season.

The 32-year-old has entered the final year of his contract with the club, but the Gunners are keen on keeping the Spanish defender.

According to ESPN, Arsenal have exercised the option to tie Monreal, who joined from Malaga in January 2013, down to an extra year in North London.

Back in September, Unai Emery expressed his interest in keeping the player in north London.

“After two weeks, after two months and now, I can say that I am very happy,” Emery told reporters.

“He is 32 years old but I think physically, with his performances with us in matches, he is playing with a very good level.

“I think we need to find a new contract with him to stay with the Arsenal team.”

Earlier in the season, Monreal expressed his desire to remain with Arsenal saying he was more than happy at the club.

“I’ve always said I am really happy, I feel very happy playing for Arsenal,” Monreal said.

“I came six years ago. I have a good relationship with them.

“We are in contact in any moment so don’t worry about that. I am happy here. That is the most important thing.”
