Sunderland 4-0 Newcastle United Under-21: Jack Ross’ men claim local bragging rights with emphatic Checkatrade Trophy victory
Sunderland breezed past Newcastle United’s Under-21 side in the Checkatrade Trophy at the Stadium of Light.
Four second-half goals proved to be the undoing of this young Magpies side, who kept the hosts largely quiet for the first 45 minutes.
However, soon after the interval Jerome Sinclair rattled the woodwork before Kelland Watts turned Chris Maguire’s corner into his own net.
The lead was doubled five minutes later when Charlie Wyke headed home from another Maguire corner.
The 29-year-old Scot got in on the act himself with an emphatic finish, before 18-year-old sub Benji Kimpioka added the icing on the cake five minutes from time.
With 16,000 fans making their way into the Stadium of Light, it is easily the highest crowd in the competition this season.
However, it is Sunderland who claimed the bragging rights from this Tyne-Wear derby.
The Mackems are now through to the last eight and potentially two games away from Wembley.
