Tottenham Hotspur news: Harry Kane becomes first player to score 20 goals in all competitions for Spurs in five consecutive seasons
It may have a touch of controversy around it but Harry Kane’s goal for Tottenham Hotspur in their Carabao Cup semi-final first leg win against Chelsea has seen him create a club first.
The penalty, awarded thanks to VAR, is the England captain’s 20th of the season across all competition and this now makes him the only Spurs player ever to have netted that amount or more in five consecutive campaigns.
It’s an astonishing feat by Kane – still only 25 – and it’s made even more impressive given the records of legendary club goalscorers Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Smith, and Martin Chivers.
Greaves can be considered unfortunate he didn’t achieve the accomplishment as he spent three months out of the 1965/66 after being diagnosed with hepatitis.
He still managed 16 goals in 31 games but it is the only campaign from 1961/62 to 1968/69 in which he didn’t reach 20 in a truly magnificent career.
Kane is now firmly amongst the legends at Tottenham, despite his age, and it’s likely we’ll see many more firsts created and records broken.
The goal also put him out on his own as the club’s fourth highest goalscorer of all-time.
It was his 160th in all competitions, easing him past 1961 Double-winner Cliff Jones, and on Twitter the left winger gave Kane his blessing.
