Trump To Visit City He Called 'Rodent Infested;' Baltimore Reacts
BALTIMORE, MD — President Donald Trump will be in Baltimore this week at a Republican retreat where lawmakers will strategize legislative priorities for the year. The visit comes a little more than six weeks after Trump tweeted Charm City was a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.”
In late July, Trump directed a series of tweets toward Baltimore Congressman Elijah Cummings and derided the city he represents.
At the time of the Twitter storm, the Post reported the GOP retreat was being planned in Charm City, where it was also held in 2016. Harbor East is just outside Cummings’s district in the territory represented by Congressman John Sarbanes, the newspaper noted. Both Cummings and Sarbanes are Democrats in a state where Democrats heavily outnumber Republicans. The divide is more pronounced in the city. There were 305,704 registered Democrats and 30,873 registered Republicans in Baltimore in October 2018, according to Maryland State Board of Elections voter registration data.

Trump will head to Baltimore Thursday to deliver an address at the GOP conference after meeting with the Amir of Kuwait, according to The Hill. The event will be at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront hotel on Aliceanna Street in Harbor East this week. It is organized by the Congressional Institute and House Republican Conference.
The annual GOP event usually occurs at the beginning of the year. (Before the January 2018 retreat in West Virginia, there was a train crash in Virginia with several members of Congress aboard.)
Originally, the 2019 retreat was also to be held in January at The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia, but it was postponed due to the government shutdown, The Hill reported.
Trump appeared in Baltimore in December 2016 at M&T Bank Stadium for the Army-Navy game and was also in town in September that year while on the campaign trail at the National Guard conference.

He had planned to visit in December 2018 to discuss investment in distressed communities.
But the meeting on opportunity zones was moved to the White House due to scheduling conflicts, a spokesman told The Washington Post.
Protests Planned
Already at least three protests have been planned in connection with Trump’s visit, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
