Tropical System Could Impact Alabama — Really
MOBILE, AL — A tropical system from the Bahamas is expected to affect the Alabama coast this weekend. This time, opposed to confusion over Hurricane Dorian’s impact on the state, Alabama meteorologists confirm this system could pose a real threat to Alabama.
A tropical wave over the Atlantic between the coast of Africa and the Lesser Antilles has a medium chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm over the next five days, according to Birmingham meteorologist James Spann.
“The weather along the Gulf Coast over the weekend will be wet at times thanks to this system; expect periods of rain from Gulf Shores over to Destin and Panama City Beach Saturday and Sunday with dangerous rip currents likely,” Spann said. “Weather conditions there should slowly improve by the middle of next week. But I stress it is simply too early to provide an impact forecast for any specific point.”
If the system becomes a tropical storm, the name will be Humberto. “Model data suggests this will not reach hurricane strength, but, of course, that is not carved in stone,” Spann said. “It has potential to bring beneficial rain to parts of the Southeast by Sunday and early next week, but it remains to be seen where the most widespread rain will fall.”
Spann has been adamant about his defense of the National Weather Service in its response to Pres. Donald Trump claiming Alabama would be hit by Hurricane Dorian. The NWS refuted the president’s claims, saying there would be “no impact” on Alabama from Dorian.

Trump doubled down, even using an altered map of Dorian’s path, and the NOAA issued a statement supporting Trump’s claim and refuting the NWS response. Spann continued to back the NWS.
