Doctor Accused Of Shooting Dog, Hitting It With Hammer In Indiana

WEST HARRISON, IN — An Indiana man was arrested by Dearborn County Sheriff’s deputies Saturday after police say he hit his dog with a hammer and shot a gun at him, according to Dearborn and Ohio County Prosecutor Lynn Deddens. Joseph J. Stubbers III, of West Harrison, faces animal cruelty charges after a neighbor called 911 Saturday to report that Stubbers was cleaning the neighbor’s garage floor with bleach after hitting the dog in the head with a hammer.

According to Deddens, when Dearborn County deputies got to the Laurel Valley Drive home, they learned that another neighbor reportedly saw Stubbers shoot at the dog, an English mastiff named Cooper. Deputies executed a search warrant at the home and found blood spots, a working hose, bleach, a .40 caliber gun, two spent rounds and a fired bullet with hair on it, the release said.

Deputies followed a trail of blood to the front of the house, where they found a large dog on the front porch, licking its front leg, according to the release. The officers also saw that the dog had a mutilated right eye that was bleeding.

According to the release, deputies found Stubbers, who reportedly told them the dog had attacked him, and he had to “put it down tonight.” In response to a deputy telling him the dog was still alive, Stubbers claimed the dog had “latched” onto his arm when he went over to him and grabbed his collar, the release said. However, deputies didn’t see any bite marks on the man’s arm.

Stubbers added that he threatened the dog with a hammer before hitting the animal in the head with it, officials said.

Stubbers was arrested and is facing a felony charge of cruelty to an animal, the release said.

According to his website, Stubbers has owned and operated his internal medicine practice, Fairfield Primary Care, in Fairfield, Ohio since 1993. As of Wednesday morning, the website had apparently been removed and a notice saying the site was “down for maintenance” was in its place.

Cooper was rescued by Dearborn County Animal Control and is receiving care from local veterinarians, Deddens said.
