Students Caught Distributing 'N-Word Passes' At Winston Churchill

POTOMAC, MD — Winston Churchill High School students were caught distributing passes that gave their peers permission to use the n-word, according to an email the principal sent to families last week.

Friday’s incident comes three days after a student was punished for drawing swastikas on a classroom desk.

“I am deeply disappointed and appalled that any student in our school would chose to engage in such a racist, hateful act,” Principal Brandice C. Heckert wrote. “This behavior is disgraceful and does not reflect the values expected of Winston Churchill students.”

While Heckert could not reveal how many students participated on Friday, or what their consequences were, she said the punishment “will match the severity of the action and will be in alignment with the Student Code of Conduct.”

Heckert added that she has addressed the issue with school staff and plans to hold meetings about acceptance and tolerance with students and families.

A Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 19. Heckert said it will be an open forum on racism, bias, and tolerance.

“I feel very fortunate to be the principal at Winston Churchill High School, but acts of hatred and intolerance frustrate and sadden me because I believe that we are better than this,” Heckert wrote.
