Wardian Wins ING Hartford – 2 Women Break Half Record

(* denotes “New England’s Finest participant)

Michael Wardian, 36, the peripatetic marathoner & ultra
marathoner from Arlington, VA, caught up to ING Hartford Marathon leader Pat
Tarpy* at 25 miles and knew he was going to win his 6th of 14 marathons run this
year.

“I saw him at the turnaround and he’s such a great runner,
he had about a minute 30, two minutes on me, but he didn’t look strong. Then
when I got to 24 someone yelled he was only 30 seconds ahead. When I caught him
at 25 he was going backwards. I’m really surprised that he was able to hold
onto second,” said Wardian, who arrived in town past midnight and slept on an air mattress in the study of Hartford staff member John Barressi’s home.

Wardian crossed the finish line in 2:24:38 with Tarpy, 28,
of Yarmouth, ME, second (& zonked) in 2:25:01 and Providence, RI’s Jeff Howley, 30, just
9-seconds behind Tarpy.

“Those guys were up in a pack. I lost them at 16 miles,”
said CT’s Brendan Callahan*, who suffered a leg cramp but placed 4th in
2:27:17. The Ocean State’s Keven O’Neil* was next and top Master in 2:32:19.

“I had a good day,” said O’Neil. “There was no time during
the marathon that I felt I was in trouble. If someone had been close I think I
could have run faster.”

Two-time defending champion Pat Moulton* was never in it,
running with the second pack through 5-miles before dropping out at six. “My
head just wasn’t there. My best friend’s getting married today and I’m in the
wedding so I’ve been distracted. I just felt tired. The early miles are
supposed to feel easy but I was already struggling.”

In the women’s race, last year’s champion, Jeannette Faber*
(nee Seckinger in 2009) ran five minutes faster to claim first in a PR  2:41:06. “I wanted to hit halfway in
1:20, a 6:06 pace, and I got there in 1:19:40,” said Seckinger. “I hooked up
with a group of guys from miles 3 to 15 and the pace was up and down, anywhere
from 6:05 to 5:50.”

Utah’s Michelle Lowrey, 33, was second in 2:47:09 with
Schenectady, NY’s Eileen Combs*, 32, third in 2:51:43. Top Master Mary-Lynn
Currier*, 46, of Canton, CT, arrived 4th in 2:51:43 with Bellingham, MA runner
Helen Dinan* rounding out the top five in a PR 2:56:00.

In the half marathon, last year’s runner-up (to Tarpy),
Derese Deniboba, was the winner in 1:05:24 over UConn law student Lucas Meyer*
in 1:06:59.

Two runners in the women’s field knocked off the previous
course record of 1:15:11 as New Zealand Olympian Kim Smith ran 1:11:32 and
Arlington, MA speedster Heather Cappello, 30, ran a PR 1:15:04 in just her
second half marathon.

“I wanted to go out at 5:50s but I was hitting 5:45s so I
was a little nervous but I felt good,” said Cappello. Providence, RI’s Katie
Twarog* was third in a PR 1:19:40 and that gives former Providence College
harriers a clean sweep.

Talented Maine Master Mary Pardi*, 40, was fourth overall in
1:23:19. – Bob Fitzgerald
