Looking Back: The 1997 Gophers
Expectations for Gopher Wrestling were higher entering the 1996-97 season than they had been in any of J Robinson’s 10 previous season at the helm of the program. Eight of the team’s 10 starters had previous experience in the Minnesota lineup and they were motivated following a disappointing 1996 postseason.
The Gophers looked every bit as good as they hoped to be when they opened the season by crushing six non-conference opponents by an average score of 37-6. The team learned from a 5-4 stretch through December and January and used those lessons to rattle off five straight conference victories to finish the season, defeating four of those opponents by double-digits.
While the regular season was strong, it was the team’s NCAA Championships performance that distinguished it as one of the most memorable and important in the program’s history. Continue reading at www.gophersports.com
