Annual LI Hair Cutting Fundraiser To Support Childhood Cancer Research

“It’s organized by the seniors in the Participation in Government Social Studies classes,” Dennis told Patch. “It’s part of the service project that they do.”

The charity is open to students, staff and anyone in the Bellmore-Merrick community.

“We always have kids from the other two high schools and the elementary schools that participate as well,” she said.

The haircutting fundraiser started at Merrick’s Calhoun High School.

As for Mepham, this is the second straight year of resuming in-person, full capacity, since the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted.

In donating to St. Baldrick’s, money goes toward “research to find less harmful treatments for children,” Dennis said.

The foundation is also tasked with looking for a cure.

“Childhood cancer is one of the least-funded cancers in the United States,” she said.

While the mission is bittersweet, Dennis is pleased to see how generous the neighborhood is for others.

“It continues to touch our community as it does people around the world,” she said. “We have students throughout the Bellmore Merrick Central High School District who, unfortunately, are currently battling cancer or who have battled cancer.

We continue to make our pledge, as long as it continues to impact our community.”
