LOS ANGELES, CA — A Bentley driver gassed his car in reverse to escape an armed robber Wednesday in the Sherman Oaks area, slamming into oncoming traffic as the gunman opened fire. No one was seriously injured in the brazen daytime robbery, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The gunman remains at large, and the victim has some words of advice for his fellow Angelenos.
“This is America, L.A., you’ve got to keep your head on a swivel,” Lee Dawson told KCAL9.

Authorities suspect the case may be another follow-home robbery because the victim was driving an expensive car and wearing expensive jewelry.
According to police, Dawson was driving a tan Bentley with a female passenger when he pulled into a driveway along Coldwater Canyon Avenue and the Ventura (101) Freeway to pick up a friend late Wednesday morning. That’s when he was approached by a masked gunman demanding money and jewelry.

Dawson put the car in reverse and gassed his car, striking a red sedan driven by a woman reported to be in her 70s. Both vehicles then struck a parked car, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
According to police, the gunman had parked his vehicle at a nearby gas station and approached the Bentley on foot. However, he fled the scene in a waiting getaway car, described only as a dark-colored sedan, and was driven away.
LAPD Capt. Marla Ciuffetelli told reporters at the scene the driver of the Bentley appeared to have been specifically targeted, noting that “he did have nice jewelry and he was in a nice vehicle.”
Police impounded another vehicle that was parked at a nearby gas station, with investigators suspecting it was abandoned there by the gunman.
