Charlotte's Speakeasy Of Farmingdale Wins Best Nightclub On LI

FARMINGDALE, NY — Charlotte’s Speakeasy, found underneath a frozen yogurt shop, was named the best nightclub on Long Island in the 2023 Bethpage Best of LI Awards.

The Farmingdale lounge was actually used as a speakeasy during Prohibition in the 1920s and 1930s after brothers Nick and John DeVito found it under their dessert store in 2017.

“There are a lot of great night spots on Long Island,” Nick DeVito told Patch. “Our place is kind of unique. And we’re very happy to have won the award.”

The DeVitos did not even know they were nominated for best nightclub before winning the award.

“When we opened the ice cream store, we tried to get everybody to vote for us every year to win best frozen yogurt, best ice cream store, best dessert,” Nick said. “We never won, and I kind of gave up trying to pursue it. I didn’t know we were nominated [for best nightclub]. I didn’t even vote for us. I don’t know who did, but apparently a lot of people did, and we’re very pleased that we won.”

The brothers found out about the speakeasy during a trip by Farmingdale Village Mayor Ralph Ekstrand. The DeVitos asked Ekstrand and late Village Historian Bill Johnston to share what they could about the large basement beneath their ice cream shop.

The two then revitalized a speakeasy in disrepair into what it is today.

“They did a great job in revamping the place,” Ekstrand said. “It’s really been a gem addition to the village.”

The Charlotte’s Speakeasy website holds the password to the bar, as the stairway is hidden behind a bookshelf.

The menu includes Prohibition-era cocktails, wine, beer, appetizers and stone-fired pizza.

“If you’re looking to time travel to the Prohibition era, look no further,” the awards page reads. “When the DeVito brothers set out on their dream to open an ice cream parlor, they had no idea of the magic in store. Not until the village mayor came for a visit did they realize their desserts were served on top of a gold mine: a historic speakeasy. After doing research and putting their ideas into action, Charlotte’s Speakeasy was born in 2017. Unlike the original old-school speakeasy owners, the Devito brothers are not a crime family but instead, a family that created a space for endless connections. As long as you visit their website to discover the weekly entry password, you’re in for a night of jazz, entertainment, and a historically accurate atmosphere.”
