Cody Rhodes: Last match AEW offered was against Sting

Cody Rhodes has revealed a dream match he was offered near the end of his AEW run.

Rhodes told Sports Illustrated recently that before he left the promotion in early 2022, a match between him and Sting was being considered.

“The last match I was offered in AEW was that match,” said Rhodes. “It wasn’t confirmed or anything like that, but just the little I had to do with his debut there is a wonderful memory."

Sting recently revealed plans to retire after a final match at AEW Revolution 2024. Ric Flair debuted in the promotion on the October 25 Dynamite and will take part in the final months of Sting's career.

"I was a little Stinger," Rhodes continued. "Maybe I’ll pull out a Stinger Splash in his honor. Seriously, cheers to a wonderful career.”

Rhodes defeated Damian Priest on Saturday at WWE Crown Jewel. Despite the long travel time from Riyadh, he will be at tonight's WWE Raw in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

“I wouldn’t miss it,” said Rhodes. “I was the first pick in the draft for Raw. I think the long-time wrestling fan is loyal and always watching, but if you’re somebody who fell out and are hearing about this wild golden age we’ve entered, come find out what all the fuss is about.”

Rhodes currently finds himself aligned with other babyfaces against the Judgment Day on Raw. He and Jey Uso recently won and lost the Undisputed WWE Tag titles to Priest and Finn Balor.

“Jey [Uso] has been a superb teammate,” said Rhodes. “I need to ask him what inning we are in.”
