Fake $100 Bills Found Circulating At North Fork High School: PD

MATTITUCK, NY — Local business owners were urged Wednesday to keep an eye out for fake $100 bills that were first found circulating at Mattituck High School.

The Mattituck Chamber of Commerce sent a message out Wednesday stating they’d received a call from Mattituck-Cutchogue Union Free School District Superintendent Shawn Petretti, stating that fake $100 bills had been found at the high school.

“Please check any $100 bills coming into your business and let the police know immediately if you come across one. The authorities have been notified by the school district already,” the Chamber said.

Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley told Patch that the police department’s school resource officers were working on the issue with Mattituck High School officials.

“We believe we have recovered all the $100 bills that were possessed by a student,” he said. “We are not considering them counterfeit bills as they are clearly marked as ‘For Motion Picture Purposes’ and ‘Copy’ on both sides, and were not presented as payment. I believe they were purchased online as a movie prop.”

Flatley also said that he didn’t believe the bills had been used. “I believe they were all intercepted and taken from the student, and I’m not sure the student had any intention of trying to pass them as real currency,” he said.
