Retired Essex Cop Accidentally Shoots Himself In Cedar Grove: ECPO

CEDAR GROVE, NJ — The former chief of detectives of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office was treated for a non-life-threatening wound after an accidental shooting in Cedar Grove on Friday, authorities say.

According to a statement from prosecutors, Anthony F. Ambrose III was injured when a firearm accidentally discharged in a private office complex. Ambrose was treated and released at a local hospital for a non-life-threatening wound.

A spokesperson told Patch the wound was “self-inflicted.”

Mitchell McGuire, the current chief of detectives, was present when the shooting took place, multiple news reports said.

The Cedar Grove Police Department is investigating the incident, prosecutors said.

In addition to his work with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Ambrose also formerly served as the public safety director in Newark until retiring in 2021. He is a consultant with the Ambrose Group LLC, which has provided law enforcement-related analysis for the Essex County Correctional Facility and the Borough of Caldwell, among other agencies.
