Firefighters Rescue Duckling In Darien Area
DARIEN, IL – Firefighters are not just in the business of saving humans. They come through for animals as well.
About 2 p.m. Thursday, Darien resident Charlie Tucker was driving on 83rd Street just east of Woodward Avenue when he saw a mother duck and her ducklings walking along the curb.
“She was able to get up the curb, but her babies couldn’t,” Tucker said in an email to Patch. “I had stopped my SUV, so no other cars would hit them.”

Behind Tucker was a fire truck from the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District. It stopped, and the driver turned on the emergency lights.
One of the firefighters, wearing gloves, lifted the ducklings and took them to their mother, Tucker said.

“Unfortunately, one ran away and fell into the sewer drain,” Tucker said.
The firefighters then removed the cover and lowered a five-gallon pail to rescue the fallen duckling, he said.
“Once the baby was safely in the pail, they lifted it and returned the baby to the mother who was waiting with the rest of the family,” Tucker said.
83rd Street is the dividing line between Darien and Woodridge.
