AMBLER, PA — Pennsylvania governor and Montgomery County native Josh Shapiro returned to his roots Monday, campaigning for Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign alongside Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

The pair of high profile Democrats appeared at Wissahickon High School before a crowd of more than 1,300, the latest in a series of high visibility public appearances from a man widely seen as the favorite for the vice presidential nod.

“I knew [Vice President Harris] when she was a courtroom prosecutor, and let me tell you something: she is tough as nails,” Shapiro told the crowd. “I watched her stand up for victims, stand up for those who’ve been harmed. Stand up and do what is right… every single fight she was in, she won for the people.”

Shapiro and Whitmer, who was also considered a potential vice presidential candidate before she took herself out of the running, have led several similar events across Pennsylvania over the past several days, further underlying the importance of the state to winning the White House.

But it’s also a potential audition for Shapiro on the national stage, as he rallies beside one of the nation’s most well known Democratic leaders in Whitmer.

Shapiro took time to acknowledge his roots.

“This is the community that raised me,” he said. “It is the community that taught me so much. It’s the community where I went out and knocked on 18,000 doors in my neighborhoods in Abington and Upper Dublin and you invited me in your living rooms and you talked to me on your porches and you shared with me your fears and you told me about your hopes and you sent me to the Capitol to fight for you. And I’ve never forgotten the lessons you taught me along the way.”

Shapiro has hit the campaign trail hard for Harris since last Sunday, when President Biden announced he would not run for a second term. He even earned a unique endorsement for the job from Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker Friday at a Philadelphia Building Trades Council rally.

“If they take our advice, Josh Shapiro will be our vice president,” Parker said to a cheering union crowd.

The Harris campaign told Patch that more than 13,000 people have signed up to volunteer for the Harris campaign since last Sunday.

Harris has narrowed former President Trump’s lead slightly in the polls since taking over the Democratic ticket. She currently trails by 1.7 points nationally and 3 points in Pennsylvania, according to an aggregate of recent polls from RealClearPolitics.
