Berlin Schools Send Unspent Cash Back To The Town
BERLIN, CT — Berlin schools open for business on Thursday, Aug. 29, and when Berlin Board of Education members talk about their summer, they can say “returned money back to the town.”
At the school board’s last regular meeting on July 22, the Berlin Board of Education voted 6-0 to return what was left over from last school year to the town’s general fund.
When the numbers were crunched, Berlin’s education spending plan for 2023-24 — about $50 million — was whittled down to $3,751, the amount returned to the town.

The school board canceled its regular meeting for August, which was slated for Monday, with the next meeting slated for Sept. 9.
That’s when the board of education is expected to issue its final report on the last fiscal year and explain what parts of the spending plan exceeded budgeted amounts and what parts didn’t.

“In our September meeting, there will be a full, year-end report that will explain surplus and final, year-end expenditures,” said Berlin Public Schools Director of Finance and Operations Ashley Dorsey at last month’s school board meeting
The end result was $3,751 in the black, which was returned to the town’s fund balance for potential future use by the municipality.
“So, well done with spending down our budget,” said Berlin Board of Education Chairperson Julia Dennis.
