ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — A potential strike has disrupted recycling and yard waste collection plans in Anne Arundel County as customers were told to follow normal pick-up schedules but not to be surprised by service disruptions.

Union officials say they are not striking Tuesday afternoon, but they hinted at more news coming soon.

“There currently is no strike. As things warrant, there will be a press release in the near future,” a Teamsters representative, who was not authorized to speak publicly, told Patch late Tuesday afternoon.

The county’s Department of Public Works on Friday learned of a work dispute between Teamsters Local 570 and Ecology Services, one of the county’s curbside collection contractors.

The DPW said there would be no recycling and yard waste collection this week in the Pasadena, Severna Park, Odenton and Laurel areas. All other towns are still following their normal collection schedules.

Despite the expected work stoppage, there was still some pickup on Tuesday.

“At 5:30 this morning, a small crew reported to work and began recycling collections,” the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works said Tuesday on Facebook. “At this point, the amount of resources and Ecology employees that will be available during this dispute is unclear.”

Residents were surprised to see recycling trucks roll through parts of Odenton. Yard waste was picked up in Riviera Beach and recycling was collected in Green Haven, Pasadena residents reported.

Some had their bins ready, missing the news of the anticipated collection pause. Others never took their cans to the curb.

“We were recently told those [workers] that showed up to work have been sent home,” DPW spokesperson Matt Diehl told Patch early Tuesday afternoon.

Diehl expects there to still be no recycling and yard waste collection this week in the affected areas, but the DPW said residents should be prepared either way.

“Residents in the Severna Park, Pasadena, Laurel, and Odenton areas may place recyclables at the curbside on their assigned collection day,” the DPW Facebook post said. “However, DPW officials cannot guarantee the collection due to the ongoing labor situation.”

The county tapped additional contractors to resume recycling and yard waste pickup next week, but it noted that collection days may differ from their usual schedule.

“DPW has coordinated with other local contractors, including Gunther Refuse Service and MBG Refuse Service, to bolster our collection efforts during this time,” DPW Director Karen Henry said in a Friday press release. “We appreciate their readiness to assist in maintaining our service standards.”

Household trash pickup is unaffected and will continue as scheduled.

Service areas 5, 8 and 15 are the only affected regions. Residents can check their service area by using this tool, which works best on computers.

The DPW said it would give daily updates. Residents can follow the agency’s Facebook page for the latest details.

“We remain hopeful for a swift resolution to this dispute and will notify customers of any changes to the current schedule,” Henry said in the release.
