3 Times Legal Limit, Joliet DUI Driver Faces Car Forfeiture: Glasgow

JOLIET — Six weeks after the arrest of Mario Chuz-Chigo by Joliet police on charges of DUI and driving with no valid license, Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow filed a civil forfeiture complaint on Thursday at the courthouse, asking Will County’s judges to make the defendant’s 2015 Nissan Sentra an asset for the police.

According to the complaint, Officer Beck was advised of a reckless driver in a red sedan and the officer spotted Chuz-Chigo make a left turn from Theodore Street at the red light, disobeying the red light, before cutting the turn narrow, violating the yellow lane divider and driving into the oncoming traffic lane.

Court documents indicate that Officer Beck turned on his sirens and Chuz-Chigo drove over a curb and into the grass with the right tires near Bicentennial Drive. After being pulled over, Chuz-Chigo gave the officer his Mexican ID card; another officer responded to the scene to handle the translations because of the language barrier.

“Mario stated he was traveling home, he stopped at Rancho Los Guzman, located at 2225 Maple Road, unincorporated Joliet, where he consumed a lot of alcohol. Officers detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from Mario’s breath as he spoke,” the forfeiture document noted. “Mario admitted to being in the USA for 20 years and does not have a driver’s license.”

After Chuz-Chigo agreed to participate in the field sobriety tests, “Officer Beck had to stop the test for Mario’s safety,” court records reflect. “Mario losing balance, swaying and almost falling over a couple times. A preliminary breath test sample … resulted in a BAC of 0.246.”
