York Scoreboard Ready For Friday's Football Game

ELMHURST, IL – The new $259,000 video scoreboard is up and running at York High School’s football stadium.

The scoreboard was installed just in time for York’s home football game Friday against Downers Grove South. It has already been used at games this week.

On Sept. 3, the City Council approved the permit for the scoreboard. It had been expected to take two weeks to install the scoreboard and train employees to use it, but the school beat that timeline.

In the spring, Elmhurst School District 205 brought its request for the scoreboard to the city’s Plan Commission, but the approval process took longer than the district thought. A school board member criticized the city’s handling of the matter.

During that time, the school took down the old scoreboard, but spent money to reinstall it after realizing the new one wouldn’t be approved in time for the first football game. (Patch is seeking the cost of the reinstallation.)

Todd Schmidt, the district’s facilities director, said he would be on hand for the football game to see how the scoreboard works. He said a city official would also be there.

Eight district employees recently had a two-hour training on running the 15-by-25-foot scoreboard.

“It’s easy to use,” Schmidt said at Wednesday’s finance committee meeting. “You can customize it any way you want. It’s really cool to watch it.”

The city was concerned about the effects of the lighting. Among other things, the city barred using the scoreboard as a strobe light. School officials must meet with the city 90 days after installation to review lighting and screening.

More suburban high schools are getting video scoreboards.
