Get AC At Central 'Where It Matters Most': Student Leader

HINSDALE, IL – A student leader at Hinsdale Central High School asked the school board Thursday to look into installing air conditioning in the school’s gyms.

At a board meeting, Shreemann Patel, Central’s liaison to the board, said he put out a survey form to students about what they would like to see at the school.

He said a big area of concern in the survey and student council meetings was the lack of air conditioning in the school’s gyms.

He compared the gyms to saunas.

“The gym, gymnastics gym and fitness center, these are where students sweat the most,” Patel said. “I don’t think Principal (Bill) Walsh wants to smell a bunch of sweaty high schoolers.”

Patel continued, “Heat exhaustion is a real concern, especially when Red Devils are always putting 110 percent in all of their classes, including physical education.”

He said the school should have air conditioning “where it matters most.”

Later in the meeting, board member Peggy James asked that the facilities committee look into installing air conditioning in the gyms.

Student voices can make a difference in Hinsdale High School District 86.

At Hinsdale South, student liaison Madeline LaPointe asked the board last fall to allow off-campus lunch for seniors. Then-Principal Patrick Hardy backed the idea.

Behind the scenes, officials tried to delay starting off-campus lunch, which Hardy detailed later. Students spoke at several board meetings pushing the idea.

By the end of the year, the district’s administration decided to try it out.

In her report to the board Thursday, new South liaison Uyen Millon said the off-campus lunch idea has been a success.

Earlier this week, she said, 150 students took part, with the number growing.

“This program would not have been possible without the help of students and Hinsdale South staff members,” Millon said.

Central’s principal, Walsh, said earlier this year that his school would see how off-campus worked at South. Then he said his school would consider it.
