Bank Of America In Concord Robbed; Suspect Still At Large

CONCORD, NH — Police are investigating a bank robbery in Downtown Concord after the Bank of America was hit on Wednesday morning.

Officers were sent to the bank at 118 Storrs St. for a report of a robbery in progress at around 9:30 a.m. The suspect was described as a white man wearing a black mask, ski goggles, gloves, a beige sweatshirt, and jeans. The jeans were later described as tan-colored. He was carrying a dark bag with a green logo. The suspect reportedly had a hand in a sweatshirt pocket, as if he had a weapon, but did not say that he had one. A dispatcher said the suspect also did not brandish a weapon.

Later, an officer stated the suspect grabbed some banded $20s from the drawer during the robbery and fled.

Officers converged on the bank while looking for suspects in the immediate area.

One officer reported a man coming up the stairs from Storrs Street to Loudon Road with a teal bag. The man was questioned later by police with a state trooper in tow, for about 15 minutes, at the Cumberland Farms on North Main Street. He was cleared later and released.

Officers also searched along Storrs Street, North Main Street, and under the Water Street Bridge but found no men matching the description.

Merrimack County offered to send a K-9, while Pembroke also sent a K-9.

After examining security video footage around 10:15 a.m., an officer stated it appeared the suspect left the bank, heading east toward Weed Family Automotive or the Ralph Pill Building area.

The officer stated the video appeared to show the man walking over to the parking lot for Weed, looking around for a couple of minutes, and then changing his clothes. A white truck may have also been involved in the incident, with bank employees telling police the vehicle was usually not there. The officer said the truck may have been driven from the scene along the railroad tracks or over to Bridge Street.

Officers and the Pembroke K-9 unit then searched the area. The K-9 followed along the tracks, attempting to pick up a scent. Police did not mention finding any clothes in the area.

The K-9 led officers to the area of Stickney Avenue and Loudon Road and then returned to the area, unable to find anything. The K-9 unit then returned to Pembroke.

Just before 10:45 a.m., the SAU 8 Concord School District placed four schools into “secure campus” status. An alert from Superintendent Kathleen Murphy stated Abbot-Downing and Christa McAuliffe elementary schools, the Rundlett Middle School, and Concord High School were requested to be secured by police.

“There is no perceived threat,” she said, “this is being done as a precaution.”

Just before 11 a.m., the secure campus was lifted.

Video surveillance footage also recorded the suspect arriving at the bank from the north along the railroad tracks between Storrs and Bridge streets just before 9:30 a.m.

Police then went to the Ralph Pill Building and accessed security footage there. One officer stated a black Chevrolet Cruze was also seen fleeing the area from the back parking lot around the same time as the robbery.

Some officers were diverted from the investigation to assist at the plane crash at the municipal airport but returned to the bank robbery case later.

At post time, the suspect is still at large, according to Deputy Chief John Thomas of the Concord Police Department.
