Farmingdale Aide Talks Lifesaving Rescue: 'It Happened So Quickly'

FARMINGDALE, NY — Dawn Puig, an aide at Woodward Parkway Elementary School in Farmingdale, was observing another kindergarten lunchtime in the cafeteria when a girl began choking on her cheeseburger on Dec. 12.

Puig saved the girl’s life that day and discussed her rescue efforts.

The girl approached Puig holding her neck with both hands along with her mouth open, Puig said. Puig knew immediately that food was lodged in the girl’s throat.

“My adrenaline kicked in and I took action immediately, because all I could think of was getting the food out,” Puig told Patch. “Honestly, it happened so quickly after the incident, I asked the security team to review the cameras to explain the step by step of events which were captured.”

Puig is in the process of retiring as a police officer in the NYPD.

“I believe my prior law enforcement experience of listening to the radio and responding to 911 calls aided in my quick response,” she said.

Puig’s lifesaving actions were reported a week ago, leading to heartwarming thank you messages on social media.

“The week as has been filled with many gestures of gratitude,” she said.

Puig’s son graduated Farmingdale High School earlier this year, and her daughter is set to graduate in 2016. Puig shared she is also a proud Latina by both of her parents.

“I’m happy to be a resident of the Farmingdale community — Go Dalers!!” Puig said.
