Sleeping In Thorntons Bathroom, Man Stirs Trouble For Joliet PD: Cops

JOLIET — Several Joliet Police Department vehicles were at the Thorntons gas station on Collins Street on Sunday afternoon, but the officers were not there to buy snacks or fill up their vehicles with fuel. They were making an arrest of a 35-year-old man from Rock Falls.

Joliet police say Christopher Wessels was arrested and later released on a notice to appear in court on charges of retail theft, obstructing a peace officer and criminal trespass.

Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English said at 2:47 p.m., officers responded to Thornton’s gas station at 400 Collins St. for an unwanted person in the store. At the business, the officers found Wessels asleep in the bathroom of the business.

Officers noted that an empty can of alcohol and bag of chips were next to him. Officers woke Wessels and ordered him to leave, which he refused, English said. Police said they determined that Wessels had not paid for the merchandise, and said he attempted to pull away from the officers when they placed him into custody. Wessels was secured by the officers and escorted from the business and transported to the Joliet Police Department, according to the arrest reports.
