Nighttime PCH Closures End After Collapsed Road Is Repaired

VENTURA COUNTY, CA — A six-mile section of Pacific Coast Highway that had been subjected to nighttime closures fully reopened this week after crews completed necessary repair work to the eroded roadway, acceding to Caltrans.

Caltrans has restored the rock slope protection and earth berms on the right southbound shoulder and lane that eroded from storm-related high surf at post miles 4.8 to 5.2 earlier this month, officials announced.

All lanes of PCH in both directions had been closed at 6 p.m. each night from Sycamore Canyon Road to Las Posas Road in Ventura County. The closed portion, which passes by Point Mugu Beach and Thornhill Broome Beach, reopened at 7 a.m. or later each morning.

A state inspector had to assess the damage each morning to determine when it was safe to reopen the road. The closure was done as a safety precaution because conditions could change overnight when there is reduced visibility, Caltrans said.

Caltrans’ plan for the storm erosion involved installing K-rails to block of the right southbound lane next to the storm-damaged shoulder and stabilizing the collapsed slope that continued to be hit by waves during high tides.

Officials continue to monitor the roadway and say further restoration work may be required. They’re watching another storm system set to enter the area this week, which could cause additional damage, Caltrans said.

The PCH reopening this week comes as Malibu Canyon Road on Monday reopened five days after a mudslide.
