Crime Sees 17 Percent Decline On UES In Feb Over Last Year: Data
UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Crime plummeted in February on the Upper East Side compared to the same time last year, according to recently updated NYPD statistics.
Overall major crimes were down by over 17 percent in the 19th Precinct compared to February 2023, with at least three major felonies down by over 30 percent.
Robbery, assault and auto theft all fell by over 30 percent, with assault down by over 36 percent with only seven reported complaints compared to 11 in 2023.

Grand larceny fell as well compared to last year, dropping from 123 to 104 reports in 2024 — a 15 percent drop.

Burglary fell slightly too, with an eight percent drop, and there were no murders this February, despite the extra leap day. Last year, there was one murder.

Reported transit crimes went from seven to three — a nearly 60 percent drop.
And petit larceny, or thefts under $1,000, saw 80 fewer reports, or a 30 percent fall. Similarly, retail theft in the neighborhood fell by almost 20 percent compared to last year.
The year-to-date data also shows a decline over 2023, but at a much less dramatic difference of just over two percent.
That’s better than the citywide year-to-date decline, which was around 1 percent.
Compared to 2022, crime is down by just over three percent so far this year in the 19th Precinct.
But the news is never all in one direction when it comes to crime numbers.
Disturbingly, the 19th Precinct saw a rise in reported sex crimes in February over last year.
In February 2023, there were no reported rapes, but this year, there were two.
And the category of “other sex crimes” was up by 71 percent — a jump from seven reports last year to 12 this year.
Despite the recent increases since the pandemic, reported crime is still lower on the Upper East Side than compared to 31 years ago year-to-date, when the major felony crime rate was a staggering 81 percent higher.
In 2023, reported crime in the 19th Precinct was down by 31 percent compared to 2001 levels, and over 47 percent lower than 1998.
