Plainfield Plans To Complete Extra Census To Secure More State Revenue

PLAINFIELD, IL — Plainfield is set to undergo a Special Census to capture extra state revenue rather than waiting for the 2030 Census, village documents revealed.

The 2020 Census revealed Plainfield has a total population of 44,762 people. At $258.35 per capita from the state, the village was set to $11,564,262.70 in annual funding revenue each year. Staff estimate the village to have a total population of 49,278 people in the Special Census, which would result in an extra $1,166,708.60 in annual funding, documents show.

Village officials said Plainfield is one of the fastest-growing communities in Illinois due to extensive residential development. Using the U.S. Census Bureau’s estimation formula, staff estimate the population has increased by 10.09 percent since the 2020 Census.

“If the population is 50,000-plus as we suspect it is, it could mean an additional million dollars in state revenue started early,” Mayor John Argoudelis told Patch. “It’s certainly worth doing a census right now. … The more people that participate, the more state revenue will come to Plainfield rather than putting that burden just on our residents.”

Staff set aside $1 million for the census in the proposed 2024-25 budget and received an estimated cost of $873,530 from the Census Bureau.
