Hinsdale Paddle Tennis Plan 'Win-Win-Win'

HINSDALE, IL – The plan to add paddle tennis courts at Hinsdale’s Katherine Legge Memorial Park was described Tuesday as a “win-win-win” for the community.

The Hinsdale Platform Tennis Association is seeking the village’s permission to build two more paddle tennis courts at the park, in addition to the current six.

“We feel this proposal is a win-win-win situation,” the association’s Kevin Parks told the Village Board on Tuesday. “We have been able to create a world-class facility at KLM Park. It competes with anything – public and private programs – around the area and the country.”

The association has 800 members, about half of whom live in Hinsdale, Parks said.

“We’re improving your facility at no expense to you,” he told the board.

With new technology, the new courts will have lighting that is more efficient than the existing lighting and produces less glare, according to the association.

Such lighting is already at the association’s two courts at Burns Field Park in Hinsdale.

“There is less visibility in the neighborhood. It’s better for the players. It focuses the light,” Parks said.

Parks was asked whether the group could install such lighting for the six existing courts at KLM Park.

He said the association planned to do so, but would need some time, given its money is being invested in the new courts. He said the new lighting could be installed at the existing courts within two years.

Burr Ridge borders the park to the east. At a recent Plan Commission hearing, a couple of Burr Ridge residents who live near the park indicated foul language could be heard at times.

Asked about that, Parks said his group reached out to the residents and gave them contact information for when problems occur. He said the association doesn’t want people swearing on the courts.

No village trustees objected to the association’s plan. Trustee Luke Stifflear noted the number of Hinsdale members.

“That’s a huge benefit to the community,” he said.

The board is expected to vote on the matter next month.
