Braun Strowman on Being Crushed in a Trash Compactor, Paying His Dues Outside of WWE, His Favorite Video Games & More
WWE’s resident “Monster Among Men” Braun Strowman recently spoke with the With Spandex podcast on Uproxx.com about a multitude of topics, including the night he was “murdered” inside a garbage compactor, his favorite video games as a kid, skipping NXT television and paying his dues elsewhere and a whole lot more.
On how he got so fast despite his size:
“I don’t run. If you see me running in real life you better run, because something terrible is going on behind me. I despise running. I can remember playing football and just being like, ‘why do I have to do so many sprints?’ A lot of is just genetics. I’m very, very blessed in that department.”
Strowman’s favorite video games as a kid:
“Zelda. Kid Icarus I remember playing a lot when I was a kid, on Gameboy. Tetris, and simple games like that, were easy enough to keep me occupied. Not to age myself but I was born in ’83 so I’m kinda like the first, maybe second generation video gamer. All that stuff was just coming out, and I remember getting the Gameboy when it came out, and that was like pulling teeth to get my parents to get me one.”
On the infamous garbage truck incident at WWE TLC:
“That was actually terrifying. I never thought I was claustrophobic or anything, but being in the back of that and knowing literally I had split seconds to get out of the way of the compactor from being crushed, it was a little nerve-wracking. All these crazy stunts that I do, the boss pitches a lot of them to me and I don’t really worry that much because I know he would never ask me to do anything that he wouldn’t do himself. At the end of the day, I feel comfortable doing it because we have an unbelievable special effects team and stunt crew on hand, and safety is the first and foremost thought on their mind when we’re going through this stuff.”
Why he came back in a different garbage truck:
“I was in a garbage truck for weeks. I had to jump from like nine different garbage trucks to make it across the country to show up there.”
On working with the Wyatt Family and finally being unleashed:
“I loved the time I spent with the Wyatt Family but that was never the final idea for what they wanted to do with me. That was an opportunity for me to learn on the fly, traveling around the country. I can distinctly remember Vince telling me, ‘I want to bring you up. I know you’re not experienced, but you’re going to learn as we go and you’re going to learn on the live events.’ I remember taking that big gulp and going, ‘oh my god, here we go!’ I was protected with the Wyatt Family. I worked on my strengths and tried to get rid of my weaknesses. When the draft came around, they walked me around the deep end of the pool, gave me a swift kick in the ass, and into the water I went.”
